Be assured that literally every recommended product here meets my highest standards. I have personally used many of these items and have carefully researched each one of these recommended products.
Please check back here regularly, because this page will receive frequent updates.
As always, your opinions and suggestions are tremendously valued. Our website is about building a community of singers, who all support each other. Please contribute your own recommended products, in the comments section below!
Let’s begin with something that is not a product and will never cost you one single penny. From years of personal experience, I know this is a tremendously helpful tool: The 4-7-8 Breath Exercise, also called The Relaxation Breath Exercise. You absolutely will want to watch this one, because it has the power to instantly improve your whole existence!
Next, something more unique!
For a touring singer, particularly when traveling by air, it is not only the jet lag, but also the dry cabin air that wreaks havoc on your voice. This product is unique and certainly worth a try!
Pampering the voice with continuous moisture will counteract jet lag and will assure your vocal anatomy is not distressed by the terribly dry air quality no one escapes, traveling in airplanes.
Did you know that the indoor air quality, during cold weather months, is equally as dry as the Sahara Desert?! For a singer, a room humidifier is a necessity. Here is a good one that is reasonably priced:
One of Nature’s Miracles
The herb called elderberry has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. It is known to fortify the immune system. My personal experience is that elderberry is more powerful than echinacea for bolstering the immune system.
Sambucol brand is first-rate and definitely worth the price. Walmart carries this product as does The Vitamin Shoppe and of course Amazon, to name just three sources.
From my experience, all singers should carry these elderberry-zinc lozenges at all times. They are the greatest I’ve ever tried for preventing a cold. At the very first sign of a cold, start these lozenges. You might just avert the whole ordeal. But if you do get a cold, chances are these lozenges will ensure it is less severe and shorter duration.
Best elderberry lozenges!
Shopping for water bottles means sorting through too many choices, unless you already know exactly which one you want.
This one ought to serve the purposes of just about everyone. It is a little more expensive but has a 5-star rating on Amazon. Remember, there are many good water bottles out there. Please find yours and be drinking your water!
For those times when you are very congested and want some immediate relief, a personal steamer can make a big positive difference. This one should do nicely:
Iron it Out on the Road
Speaking of steamers, when you travel you need some good way to get the wrinkles out of your clothes, without paying for expensive laundry or dry cleaning services. After trying many brands of clothes steamers, I can personally attest to this one being the absolute BEST!!
More Great Lozenges
The herb called marshmallow root has a long history of medicinal use for respiratory health. You might try these lozenges, which have a nice combination of soothing ingredients for a singer’s throat:
The ultimate best lozenges, in my experience, for moisturizing and lubricating the throat, will always be slippery elm. The inner bark of the American elm tree is loaded with mucilage, very healthy for the mucosal lining.
For decades the great company Thayer’s offered slippery elm lozenges and has recently changed their product line, sadly excluding the lozenges. Finding a new brand of slippery elm lozenges is not easy right now, because there are not yet enough good choices.
This one is definitely worth checking out:
Moisturize and Lubricate with Throat Coat Tea
One really fabulous herbal tea that many of the finest classical singers swear by is Throat Coat Tea, linked above.
Their original formula has slippery elm and also some licorice, for a nice flavor. You really must try this wonderfully soothing tea!
First, please check the post on reflux and what to do about it, found right here. This is one more hazardous medical issue for any singer. Reflux can be catastrophic for any singer. But please do not panic. The information and recommended treatment options found on the post linked above are sure to put you on the fastest track to a full recovery. You absolutely cannot sing well with a lot of reflux. Let’s get it stopped asap!
You have likely heard of elevating the foot of your bed as a way to prevent reflux. I believe there is a simpler and more direct way to accomplish the same thing: using a backrest pillow. (Some people call these “a husband pillow.”)
Not everyone will want to sleep this way, but I am great with it. Actually, I would not be without this backrest pillow. Incredibly comfortable and no more reflux!
This is the exact backrest pillow I use and I love it!
You have probably heard that we spend about one third of our lives sleeping. But singers have a need for lots of quality sleep that really is beyond the sleep requirements of most non singers. Your voice is dependent upon the consecutive hours you sleep, so it has a chance to recover.
We will soon also have a post about insomnia, because unfortunately so many performers suffer from this awful problem.
Having a comfortable mattress is not a luxury: you simply must have a comfortable quality mattress!
About a year ago, I purchased the mattress linked above, and every day I am rediscovering it is the very best quality, most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on — times a thousand!!
This mattress linked in the heading above is made by an outstanding company, founded and staffed by US veterans. They are so intensely focused upon providing the finest quality products as well as the most attentive and outstanding customer service.
I have purchased quite a few mattresses over the years and only wish I had found this brand in the first place. No reason to consider any other mattress, and their full line of products, including mattress pads and various bedding, is also truly first quality!
Did you know that aspirin comes from the herb white willow bark? There is no need to link you on a specific product for this next one. A very good ENT doctor mentioned to me several years ago that he believes strongly in regular use of plain aspirin, to help reduce inflammation throughout the body.
Why is this important for a singer? –Because taking aspirin can be smart prevention, guarding against swelling and inflammation of the vocal cords. Please bear in mind that taking aspirin is not a substitute for sleep or for taking good care of your voice on a constant basis. But a reasonable dose of aspirin can assist nicely with your regular vocal hygiene.
This doctor’s specific instruction is to buy either Bayer or St. Joseph brand of regular adult dose aspirin. He mentioned to me that his research points to these brands being the most effective, for reducing inflammation: Bayer brand or St. Joseph brand regular aspirin.
A World of Rejuvenation: Vitamin C
Purchasing vitamin C almost always a good idea. Unless you are sure of eating plenty of foods rich in vitamin C, supplements are necessary. It is best to avoid chewable forms of vitamin C, because these are known to be harsh upon the teeth and gums.
My research indicates there is no particular need to use “esterified” vitamin C. If you buy either the 250 mg or the 500 mg tablets, you can have more flexibility and control over the exact dosage amounts. Depending upon your needs from one day to the next, your dosage needs will vary.
If you have a pill splitter, it is easy to break a 500 mg tablet in half. Starting with a dose of 250 mg tablet, either once or twice daily, I urge you to take vitamin C with food.
This is a trustworthy brand and the price is reasonable:
Judge how you’re feeling with a low dose and consider gradually increasing the daily dose of vitamin C, according to your doctor’s recommendations or your own research, depending on your specific health needs.
Stinging Nettle Herb
One of the most potent herbal remedies for seasonal allergies is the plant called stinging nettle. This is a proven natural antihistamine which will not cause side effects.
For example, it will not make you drowsy and will not dry the throat, as prescription antihistamines almost always dry the throat — A LOT!
In order for this herb to be effective, it must be freeze-dried. There is a fantastic company in Oregon, which makes the finest organic, holistic herbal remedies, called Eclectic Institute.
The above-linked product is specifically for capsules of nettle leaves, which is the exact part of the plant recommended by Dr. Andrew Weil. Please follow dosage instructions on the product label.
A marvelous herb for help with clearing out congestion in the lungs and throat is called mullein. This is a common roadside weed with pretty yellow flowers.
Don’t forget to see the post describing this great remedy, along with several others:
The link above is for the post about dealing with too much mucus, bothering your singing. Believe me, I do understand this aggravating problem! So please do consult that post for a wealth of helpful information on this one.
Over the years I have used the brand called Soloray quite frequently. It has an excellent reputation and has always delivered great quality for me.
If you struggle with congestion in your throat and lungs, the herb called mullein will likely help a great deal to thin out those secretions, so you can more easily begin to get them out of your way for singing, especially. Excellent product here!
