Thanks for this wonderful question, Aurora!
It would be helpful to know what the cause is of these symptoms — “stuffy had and clogged sinuses.” The first thing to consider is seeing your doctor to rule out whether or not an antibiotic is necessary. An antibiotic is indicated when the doctor can determine that there is a bacterial infection, likely in your sinuses. And in this case you would be treating the problem at a deeper level, compared to just merely treating the superficial symptoms.
One caveat: sometimes the sinus infection itself is merely a symptom of a problem that is actually causing repeated sinus infections, what they call “chronic obstructive sinusitis.” And this can be diagnosed by a CT scan of the sinuses.
An important question is whether you have this condition frequently, or whether it’s only happening once in a long while, like months apart. If you feel like you never quite get rid of the sinus congestion, this could be a sign of chronic infection. Or it could be allergies that are constantly bothering you.
I am a huge advocate of natural remedies. However, based on personal experience in the area of sinus infection versus allergies, I feel strongly that a sign of CT scan can be ordered without too much trouble. This test result will be highly valuable to determine the best course of treatment for you, in my opinion.
It is a painless test for you as the patient. Please explain to the doctor that you do not believe that a regular sinus x-ray will be a deep enough examination to rule out whether there are structural abnormalities, making it impossible for your sinuses to drain normally. The only way to determine this is with a sinus CT scan, because this is the only test that will provide a deep enough examination, to make sure that there are no structural blockages in the nose or sinuses.
Most likely the CT scan will discover there are no such problems in your case. It’s still smart to rule this out in my opinion. Should the CT scan reveal chronic obstructive sinusitis, you do want this information, so you can get it definitively taken care of.
I’ve had this sinus surgery and it’s not bad at all. It’s a complete cure in most cases, as I understand it, for chronic obstructive sinusitis.
With the results of a CT scan, the doctor can determine whether an antibiotic is necessary because of a sinus infection. And then is the point at which natural remedies can be used to support the antibiotic treatment, if any.
Let’s say you’re told that you don’t have a sinus infection and therefore antibiotics aren’t necessary. That’s fine. Then you have another scenario in which it would be time to use natural remedies, to help with the main bothersome symptoms, being the stuffy head and clogged sinuses.
